Throughout my years as a nurse, I often fought with limits in my ability to help those I served and cared for. I made a difference, but it didn’t seem to be enough. I became frustrated, cynical and even burned out from the frontline clinical work and moved my career into other areas. During these times of transition and learning, I continued to work part time as a registered nurse, always drawn back to the field of healthcare and serving others.
For me, it’s a privilege to help and serve; it feels good. I take pleasure in the learning, the challenges and in working with such a diverse group of people.
Nursing gives me many insights into life and the human condition, it adds color to my life, along with a sense of purpose. It’s with that insight, color and sense of purpose that I wrote GUTS. The book isn’t about the people I’ve cared for, nor the different experiences I’ve encountered. It’s about living healthfully and abundantly within key aspects of life. It’s about overcoming and managing life’s challenges and the stresses that frequently leads to illness and disease. It’s about achieving a level of mental fitness that supports good physical health.
Within the healthcare sector, I’ve often seen life and health renewed, but many times, have also seen life and health taken away. It disheartens and saddens me when people’s lives end prematurely.
GUTS was written to facilitate a better understanding of what healthy looks like, to encourage people to be more sensitive to the choices they make and to empower them to live their lives well.
The concepts and practical guidelines presented in the book are rooted in an understanding of our core human longings and needs. The principles and strategies in the book stand the test of time. Research corroborates these concepts. To keep things simple and easy to comprehend the theory is delivered and structured around my F Words – “Faith, Family, Fitness, Friends, Finance and Fun.”
My enthusiasm comes out as I bring awareness of these six components to others and as I empower people to enhance each area as a means, or a system for living a healthy, balanced and abundant life. The theory continually renews my passion for nursing.
