Can’t Keep Going? How To Persevere Every Day
May 15, 2024

Every morning, as I awaken, it feels as though my mind is thrust into a battlefield. Thoughts assail me from all directions—the doubts, regrets, and the endless to-do list—the barrage seems relentless. To fend off this assault and maintain control over my day, I must act swiftly and decisively.

Like the heroes of my grandson’s favourite show, the Power Rangers, I need formidable defenses to withstand these mental assaults. Living with an ADHD brain, along with past struggles with major depression and anxiety, adds layers of complexity. Without my own set of superpowers, the consequences of these thought attacks can be devastating, not just for me, but also for those around me.

With decades of experience in this struggle, I’ve become adept at defending against these thought attacks. I’ve learned the necessary techniques to protect myself, heal from the inflicted wounds, and maintain a positive mindset amidst chaos. It’s a continuous investment of energy, time, and unwavering commitment.

When preparing for the day’s battles or seeking to preempt an attack, strategic tactics are essential:

  1. Mental Fitness as Your Shield: Recognize that your mind is the battleground shaping the foundation of your life. With thousands of thoughts bombarding us daily, the focus of our attention matters greatly. Access your thoughts—are they constructive or destructive? Positive or negative? Cultivating gratitude, positivity, and forward-thinking equips you with the best defense for a fulfilling day and life.
  2. Physical Activity as Your Sword: Make movement part of your daily routine. Physical activity triggers the release of chemicals like dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin—your allies that counteract stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Beyond the mental benefits, physical activity improves memory, self-esteem, resilience, and overall well-being, contributing to a longer, healthier, and happier life.
  3. Nutrition as Your Fuel: Treat your body like a high-performance machine, fueling it with a balanced diet. Just as a car needs quality gasoline, our bodies thrive on nutritious food. Junk food, akin to low-quality fuel, hinders bodily functions and vitality. Investing in a healthy diet not only improves physical health but also bolsters mental clarity and resilience, ensuring optimal performance in the face of adversity.

By fortifying ourselves with mental fitness, physical activity, and proper nutrition, we become better equipped to fend off the relentless assaults on our minds. In this ongoing battle against thought attacks, these strategies serve as our shield and sword, safeguarding our mental well-being and empowering us to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and grace.

Protect your mind, your life, and your wellbeing with superpowers and watch as your combat prowess strengthens.
