Dr. David Song, a plastic surgeon and assistant professor at the University of Chicago Hospital, states that it takes eight muscles to smile and nine to frown. He explains that when you smile genuinely, it takes two muscles to crinkle your eyes, two to pull up your lip corners and nose, two to elevate the mouth angle and two to pull the mouth corners sideways. When you frown, you use two muscles to pull down your lips and wrinkle your lower face, three to crease your brow, one to purse your lips, one to depress your lower lip and two to pull the corners of your mouth down. He also says a fake smile uses only two muscles and can be detected because your eyes don’t smile.
